Newly Hired Corrections Officer Arrested for DUI at 100 MPH

A newly hired Martin County corrections officer was arrested on DUI charges after being clocked driving 100 miles per hour on a bridge with a 45 mph speed limit. The stop occurred after an officer observed the vehicle weaving across lanes at a high rate of speed.

The driver, identified as Vanessa Alvarado, told the officer she had just been hired as a corrections officer for Martin County and was celebrating completing phase one of her training. During the stop, the officer noted watery and glossy eyes, the odor of alcohol coming from Alvarado, and an alcoholic beverage inside the vehicle.

A male passenger remained on scene during the stop. Alvarado identified him as a coworker and neighbor who worked at the same jail facility. Officers separated the two individuals as part of standard procedure during the investigation.

Alvarado was asked to perform a series of field sobriety tests. Following the tests, she was placed in handcuffs and taken into custody. She was charged with driving under the influence and excessive speeding for traveling 100 mph in the posted 45 mph zone.

Subsequent chemical testing showed Alvarado's blood-alcohol level at more than three times the legal limit for operating a motor vehicle. She was transported from the scene for an additional search before being processed.

The arrest took place shortly after Alvarado had entered the initial training phase for her position as a corrections officer. Details regarding her employment status following the arrest were not immediately available.

Alvarado faces charges of DUI and excessive speeding stemming from the traffic stop. The case remains subject to further legal proceedings.
