Elderly Woman Arrested With Large Nitrous Oxide Canister

An elderly woman was arrested behind a Palm Coast convenience store after a deputy discovered her with a large nitrous oxide canister in her vehicle. The incident occurred when the deputy conducted a welfare check at the gas station location.

During the 14-minute encounter, the woman provided multiple explanations for her presence and the canister. She claimed to be a translator waiting for real police and referred to the nitrous oxide as courage. At one point during the interaction, she acknowledged that her explanations were inconsistent, stating on camera that she knew her story did not make sense.

Body camera footage captured the woman's various attempts to explain the situation before she was ultimately taken into custody. The deputy's investigation revealed the presence of what appeared to be a significant quantity of nitrous oxide intended for inhalation.

Under Florida law, possession of more than 16 grams of nitrous oxide for inhalation purposes constitutes a third-degree felony. The statute specifically targets the recreational use of the substance, commonly known as laughing gas or whippits.

The arrest took place in Palm Coast, located in Flagler County. The woman was processed according to standard procedures for felony drug possession charges. The case highlights ongoing enforcement efforts regarding nitrous oxide possession in Florida, where legislators have increased penalties for recreational use of the substance.
