Mother Charged After Using Children to Steal Electronics

Athens-Clarke County Police arrested a woman after discovering she allegedly used her children to steal thousands of dollars worth of electronics from Target stores across Georgia. Officers responded to the Target location in Athens after loss prevention personnel observed two juveniles jumping over the electronics counter.

The woman was found waiting in the parking lot in a rental car while her children were inside the store. A search of the vehicle revealed an iPad and six cell phones, most still in their original packaging and none activated.

Target's corporate loss prevention team had been tracking the family's activities for two and a half months across fifteen counties in Georgia. The investigation revealed a total of $24,870 in stolen merchandise linked to their operation.

The case represents an organized retail theft scheme that spanned multiple jurisdictions and involved the use of minors to carry out the thefts. The woman's pattern of using her children to steal electronics while she waited outside in getaway vehicles caught the attention of corporate security investigators.
