Detective Uses Shoplifting Investigation to Serve Outstanding Warrant
Detective Franklin with the Athens-Clarke County Police Department approached a Covington-area apartment in November 2023 to investigate a series of Target shoplifting incidents involving the same vehicle. The suspect, identified as Camry Smith, had been photographed during multiple theft incidents at the same store location.
When Detective Franklin contacted Smith at her residence, he showed her surveillance photos from the Target store. Smith admitted to her involvement in two of the documented shoplifting incidents. However, the detective revealed that shoplifting was not the primary reason for his visit.
Detective Franklin informed Smith that she was being arrested on an outstanding failure-to-appear warrant related to an unpaid failure-to-yield traffic citation from October 2023. During the arrest process, Smith pulled away from officers while being handcuffed, resulting in an additional obstruction of an officer charge.
While processing Smith's arrest, officers ran the license plate on a truck parked in the driveway. The vehicle belonged to Jeremy Rogers, Smith's boyfriend, who had an active warrant for abandonment of a child. Rogers was located inside the residence and arrested on the outstanding warrant.
The Athens-Clarke County Police Department bodycam footage shows both arrests occurring during the same incident. Court records indicate that Smith pleaded guilty to the obstruction charge on April 18, 2024, while the theft by shoplifting charge remains pending. Rogers was served with his active warrant for failure to support a child at the scene.
