Driver Arrested for DUI After Slow Interstate Driving
A driver was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence after an officer observed unusually slow driving and erratic lane movement on an interstate highway. The traffic stop was initiated when the vehicle's significantly reduced speed raised safety concerns on the busy roadway.
During the initial contact, the driver acknowledged consuming alcohol earlier in the evening. The officer decided to move the investigation to a nearby weigh station to conduct field sobriety tests away from dangerous highway traffic conditions.
At the weigh station, the officer administered standardized field sobriety exercises to assess the driver's level of impairment. Video footage shows the driver's demeanor changing as the evaluation progressed and she appeared to realize the potential consequences of the situation.
The field sobriety tests provided sufficient evidence for the officer to establish probable cause for a DUI arrest. Slow driving on highways can indicate impairment as intoxicated drivers often overcompensate by driving significantly below speed limits, creating hazardous conditions for other motorists.
The case demonstrates how law enforcement identifies impaired drivers through various behavioral indicators beyond typical signs like speeding or aggressive driving. The arrest was made following standard DUI investigation procedures including field sobriety testing.
