Georgia Police Sergeant Arrested for Threatening Homeowner
Georgia Bureau of Investigation agents arrested Jefferson Police Department Sergeant Jose Marrero on March 6, 2026, following his conduct during a domestic call two weeks earlier in Jackson County, Georgia.
On February 22, 2026, at 4:30 AM, Jefferson Police officers responded to a civil domestic dispute on Academy Woods Drive. The homeowner, Thomas Mooney, was inside his residence with his children when his estranged wife arrived with a coworker to retrieve a van.
Bodycam footage captured Sergeant Marrero instructing the wife that she could break into the house and would not face consequences. When she declined, he suggested having one of the men with her force entry instead. The nine-year veteran officer threatened the homeowner, who repeatedly asked if police had a warrant.
"You give me the keys or this door is coming down. Everybody that gets in my way is getting tased and going to jail," Marrero stated on the recording. The homeowner later compared the encounter to an armed robbery.
The Jefferson Police Department terminated Marrero on the same day as his arrest. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation filed four state charges against him, including three felonies: Violation of Oath of Office, Terroristic Threats, and Party to a Crime/Criminal Damage to Property. He also faces a misdemeanor charge of Criminal Trespass.
A civil lawsuit against the city remains pending. Marrero faces multiple felony charges related to his conduct during the February incident.
